Fabrication & Restoration
Kathleen Vissar, with Amy Wells, learned the secrets of their trade while working on two of the largest scagliola projects ever undertaken at the time in the United States In the State Department’s Benjamin Franklin Dining Room, they helped create 32 scagliola columns, each 12-feet-tall. After that success, they were called on to help restore the the Willard Hotel in Washington, restoring its earlier grandeur with scagliola columns and pilasters.
Since those early years, Kathy’s skills designing and making molds, mixing colors, and imagining the possibilities of scagliola have developed exponentially. She has been called on to bring her talents to designing and fabricate objects as frivolous as an elegant koi pond and as utilitarian as a kitchen sink. Kathy and her team of artists and artisans have recently reproduced 18th Century table tops for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and brought life to the interior of the new Tavern on the Green with Kathy’s designs for a fireplace and cookline wall.
